The central question is: how and why should US unilaterally spend blood and treasure to intervene militarily in world affairs? You are willing to let DOD and the executive branch carry on in secret to whatever extent they wish, characterizing threats and saying "trust me".

The common responses are your aforesaid multifarious excuses for military action, and for the aforesaid reasons those are lacking.

Further examples of fuzzy thinking: "The Soviet Union was not contained, without active measures from the United States and its allies".

Meaning: it was contained, destroyed, even.

The point is whether it would have happened anyway, or even faster had they tried to swallow Afghanistan without US interference.

Re: the Constitution: "Congress shall declare war"

Presidents love to skirt that, so do the sneaks and spooks in DOD, like Casey/Oliver North/Poindexter crowd selling weapons and cocaine, and fund-raising around the world in contravention of explicit Congressional law, deceiving the American people and lying to Congress.

That doesn't make it any more acceptable.
In fact it underscores the deceit.
