Yes, the USSR was "winning".
What happens when the USSR "wins" more unmanageable satellites?

They lose even faster.

It's clear that USSR industrialization of the region would have been in a constant state of conflict with the local Mujahadeen customs, regarding treatment of women etc. The terrorists camps that were funded by $7 billion from the US CIA and Saudis would not have been forming the thousands of trained terrorists. Another big plus. That $7 billion was sent in to build tunnels, camps, to train and arm the resistance. Then what happens? We get what is politely called "blowback", thousands of terrorists, plus a few choice Saudis routed through to fly planes into the WTC.

Better that USSR had the problem, and then collapsed that much sooner, and saved the US billions, as well as saving the US and the world from highly-funded terrorism.
