You think, had the Mujahadeen defeated the Russians on their own they would not have been just as emboldened? Plus being in the situation they had anyway- -having a country as a base for terrorism? And that they would not have reacted against US support of Israel and creeping Westernization of Muslim cultures? That they could not have raised at least $7B because they were the gov't? I think not. I think you don't want to admit the weakness of your case. What happens when the USSR "wins" more unmanageable satellites? Inmanageable????? The Soviets had not had a blow-up in their empire since 1968. It appeared they were doing just fine. Had they demonstrated that they could in fact take and control Afghanistan, the "greveyard of great empires", they could well have been in an even better position.
