When I think back to law school at Tulane, one of my memories is of a student from Germany. As you know, in Europe, being a lawyer or a judge is something you can become right out of law school. I had a couple of German students in my classes, who already were jurists in Germany, getting additional training in the US.

What sticks out in my mind was an event where I was in the cafeteria, and stopped to say hello to one of the German grad law students. He and his girlfriend were engaged in the process of stuffing their backpacks with packets of ketchup, salt, cream, and napkins, cadged from the cafeteria.

I expect that he is a judge somewhere now. Maybe an appellate judge.
