Lindy, those Taniwha are fearsome beasts. Unfortunately, their Maori keepers require lots of koha to make suitable incantations to enable construction to proceed.

To save on costs, avoid delays and a lot of drama, a letter to the editor today informed us that the writer had gone out in the dead of night and shot the bastard.

I suspect however that the Maoris will claim he missed. Koha is moolah, dinero, dosh, loot, which is to be offered to the Maoris to effect the exorcism. [They see all that nonsense that Catholics or whoever gets involved with exorcisms get up to, so figure they might as well get in on the act too].

Maoris are considered to be human so they have a vote. If they don't get koha and invited along to make incantations, they might not vote for the right politicians. So the politicians find it expedient to go along with the ploy.

We have about half a dozen birds stopping motorway development to the north of Auckland. Their koha will amount to quarter of a million dollars [for removal expenses and habitat reconstruction]. Some stupid little dotterills.

After the Maoris and the Envirowackoes, we have the government planners and resource management act to fight a rearguard action. That'll take us through to 2050. By then we'll have run out of money so will eat the dotterills and Maoris [the envirowackoes don't look comestible and Kremlin types would surely be toxic].
