Is Dell getting desperate or what? If they think cellphones are a commodity they are really OTL. This will be an extremely dynamic market with lots of innovation as suppliers struggle to find the right combination of features to take advantage of 3G data capability.

Move over Noki! Dell does not rule out move into cell phone market

Wednesday November 6, 4:57 pm ET

KARLSRUHE, Germany/NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - News) Chief Executive Michael Dell would not rule out the possibility that the personal computer maker could move into the mobile phone market, using its entry into handheld computers this month as a springboard.

When asked by Reuters before a speech at a university in Karlsruhe, Germany if Dell would be interested in selling its own personal digital assistants with a cell phone built into them, he said, "The first products in the USA will not have that. After that you'll have to wait and see."

Both Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - News) and Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - News), which make the most popular combination of software and chips in personal computers, have recently introduced products aimed at the cell phone market -- indicating cell phones will likely become more like PCs.

Dell, which has a strategy in which it moves into new markets based on standard designs such as the "Wintel" combination of Microsoft Windows and Intel chips, will begin selling handheld computers beginning on Nov. 18.

There are already such digital organizers on the market with the cell phone feature. One, the Handspring Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:HAND - News) Treo allows for phone calls, Web access and instant messaging on a single gadget.
