The puzzling part is that whatever interrupted the scan didn't interrupt the defrag.

Later I'll turn off the printer and try to run ScanDisk again, just to see if that was it. That didn't occur to me. Would it interrupt the scan just from being on, even though it's not being used? I never turn the printer off except when I'm changing the cartridge....
