RE:"My impression of Ford is that he is honest -- and in my view, the one characteristic most solely needed by the Dems right now is honesty."

What makes you think the Dems are any more dishonest than the republicans? They may be more blantant.
Pitt has resigned. Maybe they get Gulliani now. I suspect both sides are cringing as a whole bunch of them on both sides of the asile up there in Washington, STINK.
Why do you think the dems didn't make a big issue of all the corporate shenanigans? Try to pin it on the "rich" republicans? Huh? LOL...they didn't dare. They were on the "take" too. I won't be satisfied until the lot of them "have no clothes". Also, outfits like Smith Barney and Goldman Sachs should have some officers doing jail time.
Gulliani might be the man to do it if George doesn't mind him stepping on a few toes. But George will mind and his buddies will be protected. Sickening.

Jim

David,

I think a much more serious challenge of Gephard would be from the left fringe. That's where the most of Democrat House members are.

I think the question for the long term is this: Which is better, a strong center-left party or a weak far-left party. I am not sure what the answer is.
