EricL, Vodafone NZ outbid me for some 890-899MHz spectrum recently in NZ [I gave up before it even started]. They, along with 3 others, had previously won 2GHz UMTS spectrum. I don't believe there will ever be a 2GHz buildout in NZ. We have more spectrum than sheep - enough for all the sheople to have their own megahertz.

Maybe Vodafone will do a trial GSM1x buildout in NZ. They need to do something because Telecom has got the drop on them with 1xRTT steaming along. GPRS is a failure. EDGE is still mentioned occasionally but the reason is obscure. W-CDMA isn't going to work in 900 MHz with only 4MHz paired around 850MHz.

With GSM1x, Vodafone could offer all the latest goodies, upgrade to cdma2000 stuff as it's timely. Defend against Telecom. Save a fortune on 2GHz buildouts. Re-use their GSM switches and stuff. Avoid disrupting existing customers. Use multimode multiband handsets to enable country-wide roaming [and overseas].

Yep. Top 5 GSM carrier, but just a little commercial trial to see how it goes. In a nice, safe, out of the way place.
