Just been reading the link again. Those "rocks" are actually sunken vessels placed deliberately to stop such an attack. The gap he chose to go through was only 50 ft wide!

For a submarine, this is much like threading through an eye of a needle.

He also chose an alternative route going back. He was lucky too I think, as he was being chased at the time.

There could have been a "Prien Rock" on that return route -g-
