Won't hurt to run this test.

My machines run great with W2000, I heartily recommend it. But I'm going to drag my feet about upgrading to Microsoft's successor to W2000 because with XP, every change you make to a hard drive or printer is stored in a file. Too many hardware changes, and the system won't work any more. The new Service Pack 3 for W2000 has this, too, so I will stay with SP2.

The best way to go I think is to install a new hard drive as the primary and move the present drive to the secondary position. Then do a clean install of W2000 on the new drive. Your data will still be on the second drive which now becomes a very fast backup device. Check with mfrs to see if they have drivers for W2000, I have never had a problem.

I've upgraded 2 computers with XP, and have only lost my scanner which was no big deal. Microsoft has a site (easy to find) listing compatible items, but the list is not complete. My xerox p3 laser printer is now using a drive for some other xerox printer, but it works. I found that on Driverguide.com (password all). I started over with oem copies of xp, but you'll want to purchase the upgrade version which costs more. If you have old stuff which is dos based it may not run using xp. XP has a DOS emulator, but it doesn't work with all dos programs that ran on the 98 platform.

For what it's worth, I upgraded to XP the week it came out, and haven't had as much as a glitch since. It's really really really good, and just might be worth the hassel you'll go through converting.
