Hi Mq -

Here in the US, where all men are created equal, and endowed by our creator with inalienable rights . . .

(wrote Jefferson, the slave owner, over pints of Madeira slugged down at the City Tavern, my favorite Restaurant at the End of the Universe) (where was I? oh yes)

. . . it really bugs us when people vote according to race, sex, and class.

We like having two parties duking it out toe to toe. In fact, the Founding Fathers did not like political parties at all, it is said, which seems peculiar, given that they were in at least two factions all along (Federalists and anti-Federalists, and I was very surprised to see Bilow's post about Congress that showed that the anti-Federalists were quite the minority party in the beginning).

Apparently in other parts of the world, people form political parties based on very trivial differences, and form coalitions after they are elected.

We just do it differently here -- coalition before election, rather than afterwards.

So if all the women want to vote with one party, or all the blacks, or all the rich people, that is a problem.
