The GOP is going to lose in 2004.

For one of two reasons.

First, they fail to do much of anything in the next two years. Then the country figures there's no point in reelecting them because they haven't solved anything.

Second, they do carry out a lot of their agenda. But while 51% of the country likes what they say, when it comes to actually living under those policies, there's going to be a backlash. Wait until enough programs people like get cut. Wait until people see huge tax custs to the rich but tax increases out of their paychecks. Wait until people start to see the photos of drilling in the Arctic wildlife. Wait until we do declare war on Saddam and the body bags start coming home and then we do finally win and toss Saddam and people then see the lucrative contracts that our oil companies are already negotiating with the probable successors to Saddam and realize that it really was about oil all along.

Fact is, people like the Republic program in theory, but not in practice.

So either way, if the Dems have any intelligence at all (which, given Peloski, is debatable) 2004 will be their year. If they lose, it'll be for the same reason that Simon lost to Gray in California -- gross, total incompetence in running an election campaign.
