I have a feeling you and I may never agree on this subject. Not likely. The massive spending is always argued by saying "the previous administration gutted the ..." DOD or whatever. The DOD had a fine time in Afghanistan, and isn't gutted in the least, in fact it's bloated. Both parties point to each other's programs to raise funding for their own, and they're both liars. Read the previous link on Al Martin, a bit of a radical, but has some points on budget to ponder.
