I am sure this is going to be an annoying post, but I can't help it.

I tried ScanDisk with System Restore disabled, but it kept getting interrupted. Ten restarts in a minute or two.

I also disconnected from cable, and that made no difference either.

I defragged again just to confirm that no messages about writing to the drive came when I did that, and the defrag took about three minutes.

I decided to boot into safe mode, as you suggested. This is where the really annoying part will begin.

There are no beeps that come from my computer when it reboots. Just in case I was having hysterical deafness, I called a witness and rebooted, and there was agreement that nothing remotely like a beep occurred. So there was no signal for when to tap the F5 key.

So I got two more methods for booting into safe mode.

One was to reboot, and "When you see a line saying 'Starting Windows 95 (or 98 or ME) press your F8 key."

But no line saying that appears. It just doesn't. There must be something that lets you know, but it's not a beep and not a line saying that.

So the next suggestion for booting into safe mode was to "Put a blank floppy disk into your A:\drive... reboot...A message will be displayed "Non-system disk, remove or rpelace disk and press any key to continue"... Remove the floppy and press the F8 key twice quickly... the Windows 95/98/ME startup menu will appear..."

I did that twice, and no startup menu appeared, it just rebooted.

I'm sure this is my fault. But tc, I swear I'm following the instructions.

Is there some signal that isn't a beep that I could use?

I got into Safe Mode! I found another way, and I really think it's the easiest, since it doesn't require any timing:

Start... Shut down... Restart... OK... and then press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows Startup menu appears. Enter the number for SAFE MODE, then press Enter...

So that is the good news.

The bad news is that I ran ScanDisk from safe mode and it didn't help, I got the ScanDisk has restarted ten times etc. message anyway.

I'll think about it more tomorrow.
