Below is a list that doesn't claim to be quotes, but is supposed to be a summary. Well, the first paragraph explains it. I would be interested to know, also, whether this is an accurate summary, and what most contemporary Muslims think of this: Gazzali, the renowned Islamic thinker summed up the 18 pains that had been visited on Muslim women as a punishment for Eve's transgression in paradise. The list eloquently shows the position of women in Islam and how the social customs were backed up by Islam. Here Islam goes to the extent of saying that even pregnancy and childbirth are punishments from God. Such is the nature of the all merciful Allah!!! The 18 punishments are: Menstruation Childbirth Separation from father and mother and marriage to a stranger Pregnancy Not having control over her own person A lesser share in inheritance. Her liability to be divorced and inability to divorce. It being lawful for man to have 4 wives but for a woman to have only 1 husband. The fact that she must stay secluded in the house The fact that she must keep her head covered inside the house. The fact that 2 women's testimonies have to be set against the testimony of one man. The fact that she must not go out of the house unless accompanied by a near relative. The fact that men take part in Friday and feast day funerals while women do not. Disqualification for rulership and judgeship. The fact that merit has 100 components, only one of which is attributable to women while 999 are attributed to men. The fact that if women are profligate they will be given only half as much torment as the rest of the community at the ressurection day. The fact that if their husbands die they must observe a waiting period of 4 months and 10 days before they remarry. The fact that if their husbands divorce them , they must observe a waiting period of 3 months or 3 menstrual periods before remarrying. To enlighten the people who are ignorant about "Sati" Pratha in India, this custom was a result of Muslim oppression and brutality. The Hindu women of India, in order to save their honour, used to jump into the fire after their husbands were brutally murdered by Muslim invaders. The question that arises from this is why did they jump into the fire and kill themselves? Why didn't they just poison themselves? The reason for this is that the lecherous necrophiliac muslim invaders did not even leave the dead bodies alone. Yes, they had sex even with the dead bodies! you have managed to amass mountains of pure garbage! if you spent 1/10 of the time reading the Quran as you did putting together that last post, you'd understand things a lot better. what you see in saudi arabia (e.g. women not allowed to drive), unfortunately, is not a good example of islam... especially since they are hosts to the holiest city of Mecca. not only is there not one single country today that is a good model for the way a true muslim country is supposed to be run, but saudi arabia (the country's government has a whole) is one of the worst transgressors. and despite all of the bs and negative hype against islam (which is actually free advertisement), it remains to be the fastest growing religion in the US (especially among women) and in the world because islam is the thinking person's religion. it makes complete sense to those who are logical and open-hearted. it satisfies the analytical side (the brain) and the spiritual side (the heart). those that don't know this beautiful feeling should study islam first before believing the hype and lashing out... one more thing as a general comment... don't you believe you'd get a better understanding of islam if you contacted and learned from a good muslim to hear things from the "horse's mouth" instead of going to these "let's bash islam" sites? the reason so many people have converted to islam is that they see for themselves the examples that are being set from good muslim friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc that speak volumes against the pure trash talk on tv. trust me, the warmongers are hard at work spreading the "word" all throughout the media (including threads such as these) that islam is bad. it's the classic historical case of creating the enemy, creating the feeling of hatred and animosity against these "targets" (a la "axis of evil", islam=terrorsim, etc) to make it easier to get support and to go to war with them. the end result is the war machine continues because the quest for money and power continues, and these are basic human weaknesses that the devil enjoys exploiting no matter who are and what religion you are a part of... satan is an equal opportunity manipulator...

Also, verse 24.8 seems to give the woman the right to avoid punishment by testifying four times. Don't ask me about Islam or the Quran. I know little or nothing about the religion.I just wanted to provide a link a site where quotes from the Quran can be verified.
