Grieving is part of a healing process especially for a mother who has lost a child. I have seen mares grieve for lost foals so I really must disagree with your Buddha on that point.

The same thing has also been observed in Elephants standing over the skeletons and carcasses of their deceased as well...tenderly and gently picking up the bones with their trunks and keeping vigils that can last up to a few days .

I would think that "time" is more the healer than the grieving though Joe , and the looking forward and letting go .

Christians "grieved" for the death of the young rabbai Jesus , and took this grief and transformed it into the persecution of the Jews for centuries , so I cannot agree with your estimation of the power of grief for "healing" purposes so much , but would rather accept Buddha's insightful perception of letting go of all such attachments. Seeing the world for what is is and transforming it thru compassion, love and understanding.

I would find better the efforts placed in comprehending the nature of life . In one sense I can understand the completely Christian posture that the world is evil wicked sinful and fallen ...and everyday must be a day dedicated to the mortification of the flesh . In Islam the story evolves a little further and draws back to genesis without the "fallen" aspects ...man is seen as the guradian and steward of Allah's creation , not sinful wicked and helpless.

In truth all life on earth is dependent on the demise of other life . As Joseph Campbell remarks of all life swimming in a sea of blood for our very survival . You live by the slaughter of that pig or chicken or cow that becomes the steak on your table . Well your precious mares don't have as great the karma of killing , being only grazing
mamals, and not carnivores .

nice little ponies !

;-)

PS: The slaughter houses back in Chicago and in the midwest that were set up were the largest concentration of humans being employed by any industry at that time . Conditions were completely horrible for those that worked there , but men marveled and came from far and wide to see this modern feat of human engenuity ...the place was literal hell on earth. And you can imagine the wantoness of the slaughtering of the buffalo?

How great a deed were those ? But is was "ordained" by manifest destiny for "we" are the "elect".
