Nadine, apart from the "strictly realpolitik point of view" and the "one can argue" - are you sorry they didn't?

Hi Nadine Carroll; Re: "From a strictly realpolitik point of view, one can argue that the Israelis big mistake was in not ethnically cleansing the territory they took over in 1948 and 1967. They would be in a much stronger position today if they had."

If the only change between the current situation and the one that would have resulted if the Israelis had ethnically cleansed in 1948 and/or 1967 would be the ethnic composition of the territories involved, then you're right, the Israeli situation would be stronger now than otherwise. But you're ignoring the diplomatic consequences of such a blatantly illegal action. Israel without US support wouldn't have lasted much past 1967.

P.S. When teaching children to play chess, one of the big hurdles is getting them to analyze situations with the realization that the opponent's behavior will depend on their own. Then they tend to set "traps", which means to play in such a way that they assume that their opponent is stupid. It is only after they learn to play under the assumption that their opponent will play well that they learn to win. If the Arabs were stupid, Israel would have solved her problems a long time ago.
