Looking thru the anals of recent corporate American CEO history one could conclude there are many countryman Americans just like grusum, but much less honest and upfront about it. Like Lay, Ebers, and on and on and on.

Being an American is okay but personally I prefer countrymen like the grusum types, as opposed to the likes of the other. Grusum probably wouldn't knife ya in the back, he'd call ya out in the street and ask you to draw, just like in the old west movies (well some of them).

Speaking of the old west movies a real draw type shootout actually happened in the backwoods town where I grew up, in the early 60's. Just a couple of bushwacker whites fighting over a squaw. One of them got shot in the leg but lived. Poor shots or they were too drunk to aim straight. I thought it was okay, but the town elitists thought it was totally uncivil and a bad image for the town.

Funny thing. When the Nam war started cooking all the sons of the elitists were off in college, or joined the weekend warriors (like GW). Phuck em was my opinion.

Wonder how many sons of hell bent for war DC politicians are in the services these days? Bet damn few.

Got a kick out of Congressman Kerry this last weekend. He acknowledged the Dems got an ass whipping and spoke some common sense (which few Dems do these days). He talked about running for Pres and said let em (Repubs) come after me and call me unpatriotic and less then loyal. I'd welcome it and I'll take em on anyday. He and his buddy McCain would make a good combo. As a pair I think they could kick ass. Maybe they join hands and run together as independents. That would shake the tree right down to the roots imho. A new party and whole bunch of new faces is what this country needs.

Comparing the USA today with ancient Rome is valid in some respects but absurd in others.

The ancient Romans were willing to suffer VERY HEAVY CASUALTIES to maintain and expand their empire.

The US populace will support wars for empire only if the human cost is minimal. Once the body bags number in the thousands or tens of thousands, we probably will have anti-war sentiment exceeding that witnessed during Vietnam.

I should have made the point clear in my rambling post. I am 100% Heinz 57 US American and I for one am not ashamed of Grusum or critical of his poor opinion of Canadian government (but love most Canadians) in the current world environment, if I understand his post correctly. I note that you Cannucks are on bin Lardhead's latest list and I wish you well and that you learn the painful lesson of dealing with fundamentalist islam with as little loss as possible. It is typical of France and now increasingly apparently also of Canada to criticize USA for its efforts to stamp out fundamentalist islam though we use the euphymism of "terrorists." You have a lot of muslims in your midst. Are they committed to your government or to their book? Our leaders including the shrub don't have the balls to say the words. You have to see Lou Dobbs of Moneyline to get good choice of terms. Ever see the film, "The Siege?"
In it Annette Bening's charachter says twice to Denzel Washington, "Just remember in this (conflict, jihad, whatever) the most committed wins." I stand by the 1st Amendment but it only makes sense if the folks you disagree with do NOT intend to just debate or argue, but rather, as preached in the Qur'an (don't bother...I have read it cover to cover, the official Saud House version...have you?)KILL you. I am tired to yawning of being preached to as
an ugly American. Actually that is a poor use of metaphors, but then to understand that you'd have to go back and read THAT one too ('60's vintage). Never fear, I am not in charge, but were I so then the Roman saying would rule, "What matter if they hate us so long as they fear us?" Starting with Mecca and Medina. There! You have something to thank God for in you prayers tonight. Yeah, you may accurately say I am an American imperialist in these times. He who has the gold (and the guns) makes the rules.
ta ta, as Hannibal would say,
Jim Black
