There was no more "engagement" on the part of the previous administration than there is the current one Press conferences by the current prez are a joke. Mostly because they don't exist, he doesn't take questions, and is obviously a nullity. The decisions are made in the back room by non-press-conferencing Cheney et al. That's disengaged. All we hear are military conferences from Rumsfeld. The stark reality is that business cycles happen Terrorism "happens", too, based on worldwide activities promoted over the past 20 years by the people now in charge. That improves the 'business cycle' of profiteers and oil barons at the expense of the rest of us. A big impact on business is confidence, which, if gone, forces a down cycle no matter what happened in the previous cycle. I agree we would have slammed downward after the ridiculous 1928-type logrithmic NAZ price bubble. But the prescription for that is to root out liars the crooks with a vengeance, and greater accountability and transparency not Pitt's declared "kinder and gentler SEC". What an idiot. He was likely put in there to protect Enron-itis from reaching the prez, such as an investigation of offshore accounts. Of course, he then attempts to bring in ex-spook Webster for further protection. What policy change would you recommend? Fire those responsible for protecting America who failed miserably rather than letting them blither their excuses and protect their arses. Action to impeach this prez should have begun on 9/12/2001. The gang de Bush have stonewalled and lied, and have deployed enough disinformation to make the mainstream media mostly garbage. Once in a while you'll see stark reminders that that most "news" is manufactured daily for our viewing pleasure, to persuade rather than to inform. Or, just curiosities, like "Voter Magic": bartcop.com Go through every department of government as if it were the failed operation that it is, identify the outputs, scale the inputs to what's needed, fire any failed leadership to get true public servants, and likely achieve 50% reduction in government. Then cut taxes accordingly, concentrate on an Information Government that is transparent and fully discloses every public dollar, program and individual. I.e., go back to the primary purpose of government, common defense and arbitrating disputes, and expose and eliminate the parasites, spooks and thieves currently in charge. Back to specifics, which is more to your question, making an example of Enron would have sent the right signal. Instead "Kenny Boy" looks to the street like the Bush crowd gave him a pass due to complicity. The message of "bribe Bush, get a pass" should have been avoided at all costs.
