It's a litmus test. It only makes sense if you're gung-ho to kill Islamists go down the the recruiter and see what he tells you that you can do, rather than proposing to send others to their deaths.

If you're a skeptic there are better things to do to meet the civic responsiblity to make this a better country, such as working since last Oct '01 on DOD security training, and volunteering time in the community.

There are a lot of things people can do if they have the time to take on the responsibility. It's a great disappointment that the administration hasn't repeatedly made appeals for public sacrifice. It's as if they clearly don't want public participation, and further questions their motives.

Regardless, even if we have crooked politicians and shadowy government agencies that need to be cleaned out, there are bona-fide safety concerns that we need to prepare for, even if Bush gets canned, or this (politically-motivated, many think) terrorism goes away. We're in a time in history where more damage can be done more clandestinely by fewer people, and society needs to "harden" infrastructure if we're to keep the old American Way we fondly remember...

For the next several decades we need to learn how to protect ourselves from both organized spooks in Washington, and disorganized terrorists elsewhere.

BTW, as much as I distrust this clandestine profiteering government, the silver lining is that to we will be learning to protect against the hazards Bill Joy warns about -- the race between accelerating technology, and our ability to defend ourselves.
