Do you know your kids Soc Sec #'s? Fortunately (for me), got no kids :-) I agree, they should rename it National ID#. When I came into the US, I could not even open a bank account without that #. My passport was not a good enough ID. Took me 2-3 weeks to get it. Meantime, I carried wads of cash - a scary thing. cheers, kumar

In Canada it's illegal to demand a social insurance number for most of those purposes you mention. It's demanded anyway, but I tell those asking they can't have it, and they should know that, and they back off. My reasoning, and that of the government is the # can be used both for invasion of privacy and for fraudulent purposes. If you've got someone's SIN #, you've got the cornerstone for a fraudulent identity. A Canadian public school might well demand a SIN #, (presupposing a child had one), but I expect they'd be breaking the law.

John...didn't know that the kids SS#'s were being "demanded" in so many places....Have you asked anyone of those groups WHY the numbers are "needed"....What is the point of the sports groups and the Boy Scouts having them...? Mark my words...the American people won't be standing for this Big Brotherism in not too long a time. Get some of these people who have vowed to kill Americans, terrorize Americans, and collapse American society....and after that is accomplished, the next battle will be Big Brotherism.
