Governments are not for profit corporations.

They exist for totally different reasons.

I can't sell just casually sell my stock in the US of A. The sale of stock and the abandonment of citizenship are totally different levels of activity.

If IBM does something I don't like, my option as a shareholder is to dump the stock. If I have a beef with something my local county commissioners do, it's not a realistic option to say move.

A shareholder in IBM may be -- probably many are -- also a shareholder in Apple. There are good reasons for IBM and Apple to keep many secrets from their shareholders so that they are not immediately shared with competitors.

There is no good reason except in very limited cases such as defense secrets for the government to keep secrets from its citizens.

I liked the quote posted recently that a governenment should fear its citizens, and not vice versa. Uneasy SHOULD lie the head that wears the crown.
