Never mind transmission lines. Old man winter did that in Quebec and they were only out for about 2 weeks. Dams, and substations are the real targets. Those large transformers take months to source and we don't even make them. Knock out one damn in Loss Angles and it would kill a hundred million rats and a billion cockroaches. Pipelines can be repaired in days. Pumping stations are another story but they can put in place emergency pumping in a few weeks.

Very, very tough to get large scale explosives near major industrial structures. Not impossible though.

The Germans had thousands of very determined skilled agents in the US and tried to land thousands more in England and the US for major sabotage in WWII. They were a dismal failure on all counts. How strange that we perceive the latter day, very much less sophisticated Arabs as more of a threat than the industrial might and scientific excellence of the German nation in WWII.
