Could be a problem with a popup blocker. Are you using NoAds? Did you try closing it?

i guess ie5.5 doesn't offer the repair tool?

Some of the the later versions of 5.5 don't have the repair tool. I tried duplicating the problem by monitoring the Tasklist while opening about 40 instances of IE but could never get more then one instance of iexplore to show up in the Tasklist. The only change was memory usage getting up to 50,000 before I gave up.
