Sounds right to me. Do a search on the computer for Normal.dot and rename it to abnormal.dot. Reboot Word and a new Normal.dot should be produced. A reinstall of Office would also do the trick. It's also possible you have been hit with a word macro virus that has changed the template. Run an up to date virus scan.
