KDDI To Offer Music Clips On 3G Cellphones In December Sunday November 17, 11:45 pm ET TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- KDDI Corp. (J.KDD or 9433) said Monday it and Label Mobile Co. plan to offer music clips on KDDI's "au" third-generation cellular phones starting early December. The move is aimed at meeting growing needs among Japanese consumers for ring melodies and songs on their cellphones. The new service will enable consumers to download 15- to 30-second clips of songs via the "EZweb" mobile Internet service on KDDI's "au" 3G cellphones and use them as a ringer to indicate when a call is being received. KDDI said its service for downloading and playing back on cellphones music as it would sound on a CD is a first for the telecom industry. At the launch in early December, the company said it expects to offer around 300 songs through the new service, and plans to steadily increase the number of songs in the future. Japan's second-largest telecom firm said it intends to charge either Y84 or Y105 per song, depending on the contents, and charge regular communications fees. Initially, KDDI said it will sell two 3G cellphone handset models compatible with the new service - Casio Computer Co.'s (J.CAS or 6952) "A5302CA" model and Hitachi Ltd.'s (HIT or 6501) "A5303H" model. KDDI's 3G service, based on Qualcomm Inc.'s "CDMA2000 1x" digital wireless technology, offers data transmission at speeds of up to 144 kilobits per second. Label Mobile is an unlisted, cellphone contents services provider in Japan. At 0428 GMT on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, KDDI shares were down 3.7% at Y340, 000, while the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average was down 2%. biz.yahoo.com
