First, it assures a CDMA foothold in the largest commercial market in Brazil.

Actually, this spectrum is need for only one thing! It will get Vesper out of the strictly "limited mobility business/WLL business once and for all. The network is built, they just need a license that affords mobility.

Vesper - Not even hit on cash flow
Any further investment, equity or debt, by QCOM in Vesper will reduce cash (of course) and will show up on the balance sheet as loan or investment. But the investment does not go through the income statement at all so will not reduce either income or cash flow (which is income plus certain non-cash expenses). 4QCY'02 (i.e. cal qtr ended 12/31/02) is in fact last qtr when QCOM will have to amortize good will (principally SnapTrack investment) for acquisitions. after that pro forma will differ from gaap income only for non-cash stock option expense representing tax deductible compensation expense. QCOM will, of course, continue to report QSI, investment gains/losses separate from operating results but that is not a pro forma accounting procedure. I think a company can elect to show such investment results separately on gaap accounts in fact. I hope they drop all reference to pro forma which is a dirty word these days.
