Report from Lehman Semiconductor and Computer Systems Conference in SF today (2nd of 3-day conference).

I was invited to today's session where Schrock was to present at 1:30p. I was also invited to lunch at which Cappelis (sic) was to be the speaker. Well, the latter was pulled due to his job change (HP to WCOM) and Schrock was moved up to the lunchtime spot. Here is a brief report.

Schrock's presentation had nothing new, but I learned a few things.

First, I learned how sophisticated the new line of zif chips are. Schrock had one slide showing the front and back of a typical VZ phone that needs four-bands - 800, 1900, AMPS and GPS. Then he overlaid that with a zif phone with the same capabilities and it reduced the size of the phone by well over one-third.

Also, Schrock emphasized how critical zif was to making GSM/1X possible. He kept referring to zif as an truly important breakthrough by QCOM - one that gave it a definite advantage in the CDMA ASIC marketplace.

He also said they expect commercial shipments of wCDMA chips and phones to begin in the 2nd half of '03 and to reach volume shipments in '04.

Before Schrock began speaking my broker filled me in on the TI presentation. He said that unlike last March, when TI never mentioned wCDMA, this time they had it on their chart of future opportunities. I asked if they mentioned anything about a 1X chip (which they have the right to produce and sell) and he said he heard nothing.

After Schrock spoke I went up to him and (when my turn came) first reminded him that we had spoken last March about TI when he told me they were a year late with their wCDMA chipset. I mentioned what my broker had said and his respone was that at least they were now mentioning it.

I then asked him whether or not TI could and should do a 1X chip. His response was that one would think they would [given how succeesful 1X is in the marketplace] if they were able to [competence-wise].

One final point. Another person who button-holed Schrock before me asked about QCOM's read on the chip inventory and whether there was any build-up. Schrock said that it did not look like it to them. Orders were still very strong. He added that since they had so much of the CDMA ASIC market [85%?] they had a "wide view" of the situation. He said this enabled them to tell when a carrier might be double-ordering to make sure they get stock and modify their (QCOM's) projections accordingly.
