Latest Palestinian poll:

Palestinian Poll: support for Arafat, uprising drops(UPDATE)
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Palestinian support for Yasser Arafat has slipped in recent months, and Palestinians are divided over whether fighting against Israel has moved them closer to their goal of statehood, according to results of a poll released Wednesday.

About 38 percent of those polled by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion said that they back Arafat, the Palestinian leader, down from 43 percent in a similar poll in September.

Another 38 percent said they somewhat or strongly oppose Arafat in the latest polls.

Palestinians also were split on whether the 26-month uprising against Israel was helping them end Israel's military occupation and moving them toward statehood, said Nabil Kukali, who oversaw the survey.

When asked if the uprising was achieving its goals, 39 percent said it was, while 36 percent it was not.

Even if the uprising causes them additional economic harm, 38 percent of Palestinians said they would still support it. Twenty-five percent said that they would demand the fighting stop if the financial cost was too high.

Unemployment has soared during the fighting, due in part to Israel's security closure that has kept out the 120,000 Palestinians who used to commute daily to work in the country.

Eighty-one percent of those questioned said that if the Palestinian Authority ordered gunmen linked to Arafat's Fatah party or the Palestinian security services to hand over their weapons, they should hide the guns, or do nothing at all. Only 19 percent believed the weapons should be handed over to be destroyed.

Israel has repeatedly insisted that Arafat must make a greater effort to quell the violence. But Arafat says that Israel's military actions have rendered the Palestinian security forces unable to operate with any effectiveness.

If local elections were held today, 30 percent of respondents said they would vote for Arafat's Fatah party, while 18 percent said they would support the militant group, Hamas, which has carried out more suicide bombings than any other group.

Two other parties with gunmen fighting Israel – Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - would receive 6 percent and 10 percent, respectively, the poll said.

Arafat has called for general and presidential elections to be held in January but no preparations have been made in light of the ongoing fighting, and the Israeli military presence in most Palestinian cities and towns in the West Bank.

The poll questioned more than 1,000 Palestinians and had a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. warplanes bombed three air defense communications facilities in southern Iraq
Wednesday, a day after Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Washington would immediately respond to attacks on American and British warplanes.
Rumsfeld said the United States would retaliate in such circumstances involving the patrolling of no-fly zones regardless of whether the United Nations views the shootings as violations of U.N. resolutions.

What a delicious opportunity to whack away and soften up Iraq telcom and other facilities. I am sure we will not be aware of just how thorough the return attacks are. One ground to air and I'll bet 6 site attacks in response. I have no problem with this. I'm amazed at how dumb the Iraqies are being.

Looks like the US just isn't going to let them use missiles against our pilots

I would not be surprised to see us start taking out the whole of Saddams "Command and Control" structure if he keeps firing at our planes.

KLP,

These retaliation attacks have been escalating since Labour Day. Any chance they are given, the US takes out a little bit more infrastructure.
