My wife has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and give only two months to live.

Are you crying yet?

I hope not, because it's not true. Save your tears.

One never knows here whether anything said is true or false.

But yes, I would feel sad if anything bad happened to Neo. On another thread I have expressed sadness that an SI friend I have never met in real life and whose real world name or identity I have no knowledge of injured herself. But those are actual bad things happening to actual people, since yes, there is a real person behind each persona here even if we have no idea who the real person is.

But that's a totally different thing from ideas that exist ONLY on SI and have no connection to the "real world" outside SI. My expressing pity for your daughter doesn't do diddley to your or here. If you told me that she had suffered harm, I would (assuming you told the truth) feel sorry for you and her. That's real life stuff, not blips on the screen.

If Neocon posted that his son was blown up by Al-Quaida terrorists while attending a college class (knock on wood), I
would cry very real tears.

Would you also cry if you read in a novel that a character had their son blown up by al Qaida terrorists while attending a college class?
