We've been down this road before but I am willing to look at it again. On the one hand I just have to say, so what. I don't know whether anything said is true of false...here or in other forums. The president of the US went on national/international tv, eyeball to eyeball, with his finger pointing for extra emphasis, and in a stern rebuking manner he very convincingly lied. I believed him until evidence came forward to expose the lie. I don't trust you to be genuine or truthful in your behavior here because you have made it a point to convince me that it is a waste of time. I don't trust the news reported in the Onion because they have made it a point to convince me that their articles are sarcasm. I have reason to believe that much of the news reported in the New York Times is based on actual events but may have a slight bent to advance the angle of the reporter, because that is what reporters do. Like wise with the tv news which is also not 3D. Very little of the information that I have gathered in this life time is from actual 3D experiences. Yet, I have to judge to the best of my ability which is well founded and useful, what is a waste, and what is actual deceit. Even in 3D experience, I have little reason to trust people until they have earned some credibility with me and some times they lose that when I uncover some deceit. There are people on SI who have made diligent efforts to establish the credibility of what they say, and I have as much or more reason to believe what they say is true, as I do my neighbors. There are story telling threads, joke threads, etc. There are also times where we openly tease each other on serious threads. Trust is earned or lost, here and in 3D. I prefer truthfulness to deceit and disingenuousness. I prefer to be able to trust people I am interacting with. I enjoy being tricked when it is a tease that I can laugh along with. I don't enjoy deceit that results in hurtfulness or harm. Truth and trust is something that I value greatly. The point that you can never know for sure (in this life) is worthy of consideration. That doesn't lead me to the conclusion that deceit vs honesty is meaningless or of no value. It is worth while to take a stand on this foundation. You deceive yourself to take a stand that it doesn't matter (IMO). We always know when an honest person is telling us a story or presenting fiction because it is established apriori. The exceptions would be pranks or teasing in which we get to the thrill of the punch line. We don't always know when a dishonest person is telling the truth or deceiving us.
