We don't always know when a dishonest person is telling the truth or
deceiving us.

We also don't always know when a person who we thing to be honest is telling the truth or deceiving us.

That's the way of the world.

Our difference is actually quite simple. You view SI as an extension of your 3D world, so that the basic rules of behavior that prevail in the 3D world apply here.

I view SI as something apart from the 3D world, with a completely different set of rules and no assumption that 3D rules will or even should apply here.

Yours works for you. Mine works for me. I don't try to force you to adopt mine or criticize you when you don't follow my rules. I ask you to grant the same respect to me and not try to force me to adopt yours or criticize me when I don't follow your rules.

That way, we can get along fine and have fun discussing topics like free speech, books, world affairs, and other interesting subjects..

"We always know when an honest person is telling us a story or presenting fiction because it is established apriori."

If you think you always know this, you are not familiar with how easily people lie to themselves, or deceive themselves, or fail to perceive reality in anything approaching an objective way. Any study of people trying to make eyewitness reports will convince you that all people, whether they view themselves as honest or dishonest, make poor witnesses to the "truth" in this life. Some people attempt to be more honest, but I am not sure it actually gets them any closer to truthfulness.

Excellent post, JOTW!

People express who they are regardless of forums. The deceptive person on an SI thread is the same bastard that physically drives over to meet his victim at a restaurant or someplace to continue the deception and the harm. There have been several such instances that I have recently read about (not on SI...just the internet).

The internet is simply another weapon which bastards may use. The people are the same people, regardless of the name they use. A name is only a name. A name does not post. Letters of the alphabet do not think or feel...

Their thoughts, feelings, and actions flow from a personal and accountable source...not from the misty misty land of fairies and goblins! ...;-)

It is a tough job for the police to apprehend such sickos. It takes up a lot of social resources, too...
