To that extent it would help sharpen the issues between small-government and big-government. It gets muddied with the unbridled profiteering and obsessive secrecy going on. When you compare the Dems and their toadying lobbyists with the GOP and their toadying lobbyists, the GOP wins, hands-down, for creating gigantic, secrecy-obssessed government and the economic and cultural shock that goes with it. I'd be a Republican if: (a)there were open disclosure of the public's information (excluding only bona-fide military secrets, of which there are almost none), (b)the Bush administration weren't methodically creating an all-powerful central government while removing protections guaranteed by our Founding documents, (c)we see honest and unscripted press conferences by responsible officials including Bush and Cheney, (d)American respect around the world wasn't being traded for temporary military advantage as the Cold Warriors fight the last war, and (e)there weren't overt profiteering by administration and associates. I'd be a Democrat if there were anyone who could get media time and be able to speak clearly and honestly about how to improve this country, increase confidence in the economy, credibility in government, as in the above. Instead I'm an independent, a citizen who is being targeted by predatory government for taxes and mindshare for a carefully managed series of outright lies, and targeted by malicious shadowy terrorist who we are told have various agenda, ranging from jealousy, to involvement in their blood feuds. Of course, even tho' I've been to the Middle East, I assassinated neither Arab nor Israeli, nor have I provided weaponry or funds to either side. Yet my "representatives" continue to do so, contrary to the wishes of a vast majority of all Americans. This is neither a democracy nor a Republic, it's an oligopoly of special interests -- pay your money and take your share, the citizens be damned.
