That's one aspect. Selling mainframes as server farm alternatives. But I think IBM really sees Linux as a value add. It's an open, incredibly scalable and extensible platform that is, well, as inexpensive as it gets. They sell the hardware, the software, and the services. You get the OS for free, with source code, as part of the package. Sure beats buying AIX.
