The least you should have done is to wake up the sheriff. Intrusion and threat...

Lot of weird stuff happens in New Orleans.

Used to see sailors on shore leave, walking around drunk flashing big wads of bills, with women on each arm, and a man or two following in the background -- and know he was gonna get rolled. Hit on the head, robbed, and left in the alley, because that's just what happened to guys like that.

Saw my first dead man when I was in kindergarten, walking to school in the morning. A dead black man lying on the sidewalk in front of a bar. He was cut in a knife fight over a card game.

One place I worked was across the street from a black bar, and frequently at night there would be gun shots. We'd hit the floor, or hide out in the darkroom, because sometimes the bullets came through the wall. I didn't like working the night shift at that place.

The woman who owned a house across the street from my apartment was murdered by a black kid who came in the back door while she was out in the front yard watering her plants. Thirteen year old kid. Already had a record. They caught him by his fingerprints.

One morning I came out of the apartment to go to the grocery, and there was maybe a quart of blood on the sidewalk in front of the gate. I followed the blood trail for several blocks, then it stopped.

I used to go to the cemetaries to take pictures of the old tombs because they are so strange looking, but after the first casino came to town, the cemetaries became very dangerous places. Tourists get mugged all the time in the cemetaries, and sometimes killed.

I think they should tell tourists who go to New Orleans that if someone tries to take your purse or wallet, just let them, because if you don't, they'll try to kill you. And that's the truth.

There are places in New Orleans where even the cops are afraid to go.

It's not just crime, either. I have photos of the liquor store on the corner, with a car through the plate glass window. I have photos of people going down my street in a little bass boat powered by an outboard moter after a big rain. I just took stuff like that for granted.

One of my earliest memories is of a car that ran up on the sidewalk and hit the wire that held up some kind of pole, knocked over the pole so it was at an angle (telephone pole maybe) and kept going up so it was suspended in the air. Everybody came out and took pictures. I thought stuff like that was normal.

People go around drunk or high all the time. You can walk down the street carrying a beer or a highball and the only time you'll get in trouble is if the drink is in a glass container. Needs to be in a can or a plastic cup.

Oh, and don't get me started about what happens during Mardi Gras!
