Pretty weak considering this was exactly the argument against CDMA not too long ago,

Weak only if WiFi has some compelling advantage. Remember that CDMA is making its inroads not simply because it is cool or new, but because it is technically superior and cost effective. Moreover, its advantages are for the network provider perhaps more than the end consumer. WiFi is cool, but where is the incentive for anyone to build a ubiquitous network that is free?
