Thomas, "Weak only if WiFi has some compelling advantage."

So, you can not think of any compelling advantages? In all application spaces?

Examine: "WiFi is cool, but where is the incentive for anyone to build a ubiquitous network that is free?"

Good question. Come to think of it, where is the incentive for anyone to hand out air miles for "free"? And if ubiquity is so important, why are there so many darn loyalty programs out there?

Where is the incentive for companies to allow "free" access to the Internet for their employees? And if ubiquity is so important, why are there so many different modem protocols out there?

Where's the incentive to allow employees to take laptops home and blabber back and forth to each other on message boards like SI (free, for some of them)? And with the imperatives of ubiquity, how come there are so many different laptops out there?

What about Hotmail versus Yahoo? Or LINUX and its dozen variants, for that matter.

Personally I think you're overestimating the importance of ubiquity, and understating the value of "free".

John

This is a good background document on wireless by Intel.

intel.com

Wireless LAN standards mentioned. However, the important wide area network 802.16a standard(still in development) has been omitted.

Take care
