It is possible to get across the CDN-US border without being seen or at the crossings without too much interrogation but a lot more get caught than is generally thought.

Yep, that's for sure. It's not quite so simple as many like to suggest.

And re: crossing borders and coming and going. I live quite close to a border crossing and people don't just "come and go" the way the press likes to make it sound. Customs on both sides are mighty picky. If things aren't checking out the way they like, you'll be pulled out of line and have to answer a lot more questions and maybe have your car or truck scrupulously inspected. That's nothing new. It's been that way for the past 25 years or more along this section of border. BTW, I never cross the border without my passport. It's not necessary, but it just makes life a lot easier.

EC,...border crossings,

I get pulled over going into Canada 90% of the time...of course if you saw a picture of me you'd know why.<G>
I really don't mind it though, means to me they're doing their job. I just wish they were a little more knowledgable.
First crossing this past summer, told them I wanted to renew my permit for the shotgun - pulled over & went in - 2 "first nations" females checked out my rig (truck camper & 12' Wells Cargo trailer with ATV and supplies inside). After 20+ minutes they emerge with something in their hand.
"What's this?" It was a Bear Banger I bought in '01 at a Canadian Tire in Prince George...still in the case with the price sticker on it (actually forgot I had it). After another 20+ minutes inside and a thorough inspection by 7 other guards it was deemed "OK" however, make sure I declare it every time I cross the border. No matter its a Canadian product sold in Canada!!! Every time I crossed, even up in the north (Skagway to YT, Haines to YT) not one border guard knew what the damned thing was...and most Canadians I met on trails had them!
Another time I was questioned at length because I had a piece of duct tape over the end of the shotgun barrel. Finally I told the girl that in VietNam we used to put rubbers over the ends of the flash suppressors on the M16's.
A few years ago, the shotgun I brought had a choke on it. Had a helluva time telling the young fellow it wasn't a silencer!
As I said, I don't mind the searches at all, gives me a break from all the driving. But I just wish they knew a little more about what they're looking at.<G>
