Hi KLP; Interesting links. I wonder if the "Quasi War with France" killed a smaller proportion of the American public than did the attack on the WTC and the various terrorist activities. Since we're now 40 times larger, I'd bet that it would be close, what with all the commerce raiding that was going on. I couldn't find the numbers, but I did find this link, and I miss the polite manner of speaking as was used by a class of people who considered it normal to carry swords (imagine 24" double edged razor sharp steel blades, designed to kill as quickly as possible) on their hips, and only slightly outside of normal to cut each other's guts out with them over what we would think of as an insignificant slight:
