I think we can all pass on the shorts are amoral issue(s).

zonder,
Would you mind giving us a little view into how you trade? You don't have to give specifics but I would be interested in how you decide to close a position, long or short, when it's going well. I'm doubly curious as to how much rope you give to a losing position? Do you have set parameters for your trades in advance or do you wing it as the trading progresses?

If you are going to linger in the financial markets, you need to let go of that sentimentality re investments.

So it is OK to profit from ANY situation no matter how terrible? I find it difficult to believe that this is what you truly think; at least I hope not.

I really do not see how you can overlook the above and say people who made money shorting the market in 2002 made money out of other people's tragedies.

The volatility witnessed this year was greater than any time for at least 15 years, partly because of threats- both real and imagined. Rumors abounded(anthrax etc) on the trading floors; how many of these were specious and started by those wishing to gain by shorting is open for debate. What is not open is the fact that longs have absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose by spreading these sorts of rumors.

It is not my place to give you advice

And to make it clear, I was never giving advice, merely stating my heartfelt opinion.
