I would love to get into this, but duty calls this morning. I'll try to remember to get back to it.

But I'll leave you with one thought. You may care more about Elizabeth Bennett, but I suspect it's Jane's wickedly acerbic observations that you enjoy more than her sweetness and light. A novel full of all good, nice people only saying all good, nice things would be unreadable--even in Mitford or Fairacre there are nasties to keep us interested.

You need to speak for yourself. I don't think everyone is a cheering section when they read. I certainly am not. I don't think either of my parents ever read fiction that way.

What I said was, you wouldn't want to take the characters home. And that bad characters are more interesting. I stand by that. There are very few I would want to bring to life and introduce to my family, "bad" or "good".
