Oh, I forgot one of the new threads on the Canadian canoe forum which I posted about earlier:

DOWNHILL CANOES:

Winter madness has set in and within a couple of months there will be opportunities to engage in downhill canoe races. I am looking for advice on the best canoe for this activity (keeled canoes dont do too well on curved trails and are a disaster if there is no snow in the woods and they go straight where the trail bends) and paddling (or is it poling) technique on snow. Also wax advice is needed. Grumman owners need not reply because I have seen and heard the awful carnage of metal canoe careening over rocks and trees.

So far we're up to 9 replies and 333 views. (o:

Gonna start a no-bin Laden lodge and advertise in all the right wing Murikan mags, "we only fly un-jackable beechcraft, beaver and norseman. (you can't move let alone break into the cockpit.) Nice trout, pickerel and no pollution. Call Hassan."

River canoeing would be some deal for Murikans and Yuripeens. Should start some kind of thing. Bin Canoein, Laddie since I was a tadpole. Severen(sp), French, Lady Evelyn, Abitibi, Grenadier Pond done a lot of 'em. Georgian Bay beats the Atlantic anyday. Don't ask me why people go on ocean cruises, besides whales, grey water clouds, other tourorists and the piano lounge what's to see?

1. tell by the way they are arguin it's wolf as bear is unmistable. But stuff with hair in it is always suspect. Bears don't do logs usually.

2. portages are the joy if it. I use a kicker now and then. Gotta have em for hunters, trollers etc.. (were eles you gonna get out and find ore deposits?)

3. rubber high boots felt liners with rubber harness of inner tube type. The professional's choice. I was borne in snowshoes. you should have heard by mother. She never like me after that.

What is wrong with toilets that run and rusty shower stalls, and one burner stove? We design them that way. start with rust, no decline, one burner they gotta call you if it stops working, and toilets that run don't freeze. Ratty towels and non existent soap don't get stolen. I like log cabin walls and picnic tables. They have to go crazy with an axe for a half hour to do any damage. If they do you say its artifact of the old Finn builder signing his work. Part of their religion.

Wolverine canoes (Wawa) are best hands down. Track and turn uncanny. Light and strong. Easy to paddle. I don't know if they are still around. Good design. Prospector design is a beast for carrying loads. Doesn't paddle well. Too short. Better off with a 20 foot for waterline speed. Chestnuts are classic designs, poor in wind, slow to paddle. What you want is low freeboard, and wide V bottom. Actually safer in all water. Don't argue, you are wrong in advance. :)
