Mike-- Read the enclosed from Pres. Khatami of Iran. IMO, if Bush followed the African proverb of speaking softly while carrying a big stick, he would not be distrusted. OTOH, Khatami must take care not to be seen as being an advocate of the US. I still view the transformation of Iran as being the biggest current story.

I feel it is unfair to include Turkey, a secular democracy for 70 years, in that list next to Iran. I do not know if you have ever been there, women wear mini-skirts and swim in bikinis next to men in the sea, there is no prayer in schools or anything, and it is in the constitution that the state is "secular". Although the human rights record is tarnished and there is ample corruption, elections are democratic and religion occupies no more the lives of its inhabitants than in any country in the West.
