Let's see: we supported the repressive regime of Saddam Huessein (yes that right holier than thou Americans, we were once an ally of Saddam Huessein and helped him build his war machine back in the 1980s that he used to invade Kuwait). We supported the repressive regime of the Shah of Iran from the 1950s through 1970s. We've supported the repressive regime in Saudia Arabia for years. Our support for these repressive regimes has built up much anger towards the U.S. over the years.

Our troops have been stationed in their holy land for twelve years. We can debate whether or not they should be there, but they have in fact been there for over a decade. And our presence in Saudia Arabia is angering some of the muslims who consider it to be their holy land. We should consider whether it's worth stationing troops there.

100,000s of Iraqi civillians died in Gulf War I and have died since as a result of the sanctions imposed by the U.S. and Britain. We can debate who is responsible for those deaths. But. that's irrelevent, because in the muslims eyes, the U.S. is responsible for the deaths. They don't care how we perceive the situation. Perception is stronger than reality. We need to change the perception of those who hate us.

Once Saddam is gone, we should have a serious debate about whether or not we should keep troops stationed in Saudia Arabia. What are the costs and what are the benefits?
