I realize this is a minority opinion, but I found Tolkien suffocatingly tedious and slow. I think the Lord of the Rings could easily have been cut to about half it's present length and not lost anything...in fact, it would have gained considerable forward motion.

I forced myself to read it, but the whole time I was scratching my head wondering what people saw in it, and I've never been so glad to finish a book and move on to something else.

And I say this as a voracious reader who has seventeen bookcases full of books in his home, on all subjects.
