all for the low price of 4300

Whoops, there goes the bed and the ergonomic chair...

the city cited us for the wrought iron fence, saying it didn't meet code

Please forgive me for laughing. I'd say that's the perfect ending to the fence story except that I know it's not the end. Those scenarios just don't end.

Time to toss some tea bags in the pool as a symbolic protest. Get the media to cover it.

Heck, you ARE the media!

Thinking back to your post on the meal at the shelter, you hit the nail on the head about them having their own rules.

I met Tom a few years ago and he's a real character. He bought a very run down house and has been living in the basement while fixing it up. He got the ripping out done in part of it and has finished one room very nicely.

Last spring a guy was mugged and shot in Tom's driveway and the police went into Tom's house to "secure the scene". Tom grew some "herb" in the basement for his own use and he was arrested. Between his arrest and bail his house was vandalized and the city won't let him live there because of code violations. Now he won't put any money or work into the house because it may be confiscated because of his agricultural doings so he's sleeping at the homeless shelter. Owns a house and has $100k in the bank and he's homeless.

Anyway, he and a couple of really homeless hang at the house during the day "working" on the house. I stopped by to see how he was doing yesterday and the real homeless are different. They don't look at you and they don't want you to look at them. Even saying Hi isn't well tolerated. It was really spooky just being in the house for 10 minutes.
