Unfortunately silent majorities do not make good news stories. The media more and more these days, above all else, produces a product. The noisy and militant minority also have something to sell. So there's a natural symbiosis at work that is, in a maddening sort of way, aggravating the problem. One side needs publicity, the other side needs something dramatic and riveting to present. Terrorism and the threat of terrorism is riveting. Silent moderation and the threat of continued silent moderation isn't. So not only do the moderates need to risk standing up against the terrorists, they sadly also need to risk being widely ignored by the media for doing so.
