Hard-core Islamists (not the current "Muslim Democrat" variety) came to power once before. They could not change anything.

I believe this is primarily due to the Turkish military as the self-appointed guarantor of democracy in the nation (in exchange for a certain amount of privilege for themselves)..

The manner in which the Turkish military, a authoritarian organization, acts in order to prevent any other radical or militant faction from turning the nation into a dictactorship/theocracy, is rather fascinating...

It will be when Islamic militants infiltrate the ranks of this military, as occurred in Egypt, that we'll see troubles.

Isn't it strange that you are the only one around SI to find my posts strange ?
Especially when Muslims and naked flesh are concerned...

I do respect those in Turkey who tolerate miniskirts and bikinis, and great respect for those that fought for this basic human right, yes basic; but I though I sensed a violent push backwards from the "tchador gangs" on the last elections; and have that strange feeling that the election was political; not that I mind, nor, again, that I find her beauty anywhere above average...
