Re B-29 - 345 destroyed?
Yes, derived from a past search of the Web- But its nothing that the Military or the company wants to talk about. They were actually grounded for a while, then flown at lower altitudes and lighter weights to reduce engime loads. Here is one good reason they were put back to work.......
Fly 1500 miles , get rammed by two fighters, shoot down 12 and return non-stop over water 1500 with only three engines.
<<<The defensive armament system proved successful in combat, and was exclusive among the combatants
during the war. On January 27, 1945, the B-29 identified as "B-29 A Square 52" scored 14 kills over
Tokyo, Japan, as follows: rammed by two fighters, gunners then shot down twelve more fighters, the
damaged bomber flew 1,500 miles back to Saipan on three engines, crash landed, all crewmen survived, but
the aircraft was written off. This is probably the highest number of air-to-air kills by a single airplane during one mission. >>
